Over 30 volunteers helped over the two days with people travelling from as far as Perth and Rockingham to assist in planting just on 16,000 trees and shrubs endemic to the area. The York Shire tree planter was a welcome help as the terrain was steep and rocky but spectacular vistas across to York were a pleasant backdrop.
These events remind us of the wonderful community spirit we have in our community and how everyone is willing to help each other out. We look forward to watching the seedlings grow and mature on the two properties, one on Talbot Road and the other on Qualen Road over the coming years. We acknowledge the support of the Wheatbelt NRM and Leigh who helped out at both plantings.

Second Planting Day 2015 - 1st August

We had 14 willing volunteers who braved the early morning rain and cold to plant out just on 4,000 seedlings at Gill and Bruce's property on 1st August 2015. Talbot had enjoyed just on 40mm of rain this week so perfect planting conditions for the seedlings. It was a great team effort finishing for an early lunch then some site in-filling after lunch. Thank you everyone for your community spirit and great effort again.
There were 24 people helping on the day from five community groups, the TBLMA, Avon District Wildflower Society, Men of the Trees, Wheatbelt NRM and Toodyay Friends of the River. We planted approximately 5000 local species in the rip lines prepared by Peter.
The purpose was to clean up the Reserve of rubbish and to discuss further work to be undertaken at the Reserve.
A big THANK YOU goes to the ten willing volunteers who assisted during the morning collecting the many cans, bottles and larger rubbish including a fridge, two tractor tyres, wire, sheep tags and even a bathroom renovation that had been dumped at the Reserve. Unfortunately it was wet and hence the camera lens had a rain drop on it but the extent of the rubbish piled at the main gate can be seen below.

We were able to observe that the trees planted in 2013 had suffered no ill effects from the long dry summer and are thriving in the rehabilitated section of the old gravel pit.
A lovely variety of wildflowers have blossomed and were a delight to behold.
Initially formed to improve degraded conditions along the Talbot Brook, a tributary to the Avon River south-west of York, this group has recognised a need beyond this area with new projects now undertaken in nearby catchments. All work undertaken by TBLMA is on a voluntary basis, with new projects planned and implemented every year.

The group has been highly successful with engaging with local landholders about the benefits of landcare, liaising with key stakeholders and holding workshops on key issues such as rivercare and in undertaking restoration work. A number of creek lines have been restored and revegetated by using natural vegetation, establishing perennial species such as upslope on recharge areas, as well as working on correcting acid sulphate soils. Riparian areas along creek lines have been protected by the erection of fences to stop stock intrusion, with revegetation undertaken to correct for erosion and advancement of salinity.

These projects have shown remarkable recovery from salinity and erosion and by planting species indigenous to the area, albeit with some adaption to changing soil conditions, are endeavouring to recreate a biodiversity which has been in these areas in the past, before agriculture commenced.
Initially formed to improve degraded conditions along the Talbot Brook, this group has been highly successful in encouraging landholders to undertake restoration work on their properties in the Talbot Brook and adjacent catchment areas, and in obtaining funding when capital works are required. The main reason our group has kept together whilst other land care groups in our area have folded is that there is a nucleus of members who are dedicated to bringing about actual change to the degraded areas in which we live. Since 1995 there has been a core of members in our association, many of whom are farmers, namely Dennis Luelf, Laurie Fairclough, David Breen, Geoff Williams, Robert and Eggy Boggs, Liz Manning, Ian Beresford-Peirse, and Colin Cable who all have been instrumental in helping in the fight against salinity in our area. Being prepared to tackle sites outside of the properties owned by group members has also contributed to the large number of successful projects for which this group has been responsible. Whilst initially members were mostly local landholders, a number of members who have now left the area have maintained their connections with the group, returning to participate on community working days.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-152883232186590036.post-30000666463690299772010-08-25T19:11:00.001+08:002010-08-26T07:14:48.420+08:00TBLMA Aims and objectivesThe objectives of the TBLMA are to liaise and work with the farming community in preventing land degeneration and to undertake restoration of land that has suffered from degradation. The aims are to:

(a) restore creek lines which are tributaries to the Avon and Swan River systems to prevent nutrients and sediment from depositing downstream,

(b) revegetate degraded sites with plant species indigenous to the area which can lead to greater biodiversity of flora and fauna,

(c) understand and treat acid sulphate soils and salted seeps,

(d) promote the use of perennial plant species to assist in the control of rising ground water.

Expected benefits will be improved farming practices and a more highly valued landscape for the benefit of future generations.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com
